- LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY SEEKS A LICENSEE TO FUND RESEARCH AND COMMERCIALIZE A DEVICE USING EXPANDING SHAPED MEMORY POLYMER FOR TREATING ANEURYSMS AND ARTERIAL-VENOUS MALFORMATIONS Announcement: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), wants to license the technology to use Expanding Shaped Memory Polymer (SMP) for the purpose of treating aneurysms and arterial-venous malformations (AVMs). The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy is seeking industrial partners willing engage in cooperative research (CRADA) and license the technology for using SMP foam to treat aneurysms and AVMs. The final goal of this process is the commercialization of this technology by the CRADA partner. Shaped Memory Polymer (SMP) refers to a polymer which displays shape memory behavior, which means they can be formed into a primary shape, subsequently deformed into a stable secondary shape, and then controllably actuated to recover their primary shape. The LLNL technology uses a secondary shape, which can pass through the arteries, and then uses a laser based photothermal system to heat the SMP, which causes the SMP to recover to its primary shape and expand to fill the cavity caused by the aneurysm or AVM. Therefore, this device acts like an inflatable ?foam plug? which a doctor can maneuver through body before deploying in the appropriate place to plug an aneurysm or AVM. Researchers at LLNL have demonstrated the basic principal for this device, but are still in the process of perfecting the device?s operation. The device would also require medical trials before coming to market since the SMP would remain permanently in the patient. For this reason, LLNL would like to find a CRADA partner to help finish the research necessary to make this a practical device. The CRADA partner would also assume this responsibility for commercializing the device, which would include performing human trials and obtaining FDA approval. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Shaped Memory Polymer (SMP) for the purpose of treating aneurysms and arterial-venous malformations (AVMs) should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. 3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization P.O. Box 808, L-795 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: FBO 69-04 Please provide your written statement within thrity (30) days from the date this announcement is published to ensure consideration of your interest in LLNL's Shaped Memory Polymer (SMP) for the purpose of treating aneurysms and arterial-venous malformations (AVMs).
