Description
LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY SEEKS A LICENSEE TO COMMERCIALIZE A DEVICE USING SHAPED MEMORY POLYMER TO RELEASE EMBOLIC COILS FOR TREATING ANEURYSMS AND ARTERIAL-VENOUS MALFORMATIONS Announcement: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), wants to license the technology to use Shaped Memory Polymer (SMP) to release Embolic Coils for the purpose of treating aneurysms and arterial-venous malformations (AVMs). LLNL has developed the technology for using Shaped Memory Polymer SMP to release embolic coils. SMP refers to a polymer which displays shape memory behavior, which means they can be formed into a primary shape, subsequently deformed into a stable secondary shape, and then controllably actuated to recover their primary shape. The LLNL technology uses a secondary shape, which holds the coils, and then uses a laser based photothermal system to heat the SMP, which causes the SMP to recover to its primary shape and release the embolic coils. LLNL researchers have demonstrated embolic coil release times of under 1 second using this SMP technology. This fast release time helps to minimize the fluoroscopy radiation exposure necessary to monitor the procedure and complications resulting from extended operating time. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Shaped Memory Polymer (SMP) to release Embolic Coils should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. 3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization P.O. Box 808, L-795 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: FBO 70-04 Please provide your written statement within thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is published to ensure consideration of your interest in LLNL's Shaped Memory Polymer (SMP) to release Embolic Coils.
