- LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY SEEKS A LICENSEE TO FUND RESEARCH AND COMMERCIALIZE A DEVICE USING SHAPED MEMORY POLYMER FOR TREATING ISCHEMIC STROKES Announcement: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is seeking industrial partners willing engage in cooperative research (CRADA) and license the technology for using SMP to treat ischemic strokes. The final goal of this process is the commercialization of this technology by the CRADA partner. Shaped Memory Polymer (SMP) refers to a polymer which displays shape memory behavior, which means they can be formed into a primary shape, subsequently deformed into a stable secondary shape, and then controllably actuated to recover their primary shape. The LLNL technology uses a secondary shape that can pass through the arteries and then poke through the blood clot causing the ischemic stroke. Then, the LLNL technology uses a laser based photothermal (or other thermal) system to heat the SMP, which causes the SMP to recover to its primary shape. The primary shape is one that grabs the blood clot from both sides. Once the SMP device grabs the clot, it can be safely removed from the body. LLNL currently has government funding to work on this project, and actively working on finalizing the final configuration of the ?grabbing? shape, characterizing the SMP material properties, and testing the biocompatibility of SMP. LLNL believes the technology is sufficiently mature to engage a commercial partner to commercialize the device. LLNL currently intends to finish the various SMP studies, finalize the design, and test the device in animals. LLNL wants the involvement of a commercial partner at this stage to help design a device that will be accepted in medical marketplace. The commercial partner would also have the primary responsibility for taking this device through human clinical trials and obtaining FDA approval. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Shaped Memory Polymer (SMP) for treating ischemic stroke should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1.
