Description
The U.S. Army Research Laboratory is conducting a market investigation to identify possible sources of a corrosion resistant aluminum alloy with improved ballistics for armor applications. This improved armor plate must have corrosion resistance equa l to or better than AA5083-H131 as well as ballistic performance comparable or better than AA7039-T64. In addition, the alloy must exhibit good welding characteristics to include compatibility with existing AA5083-H131 and AA7039-T64 armor materials field ed. Aluminum armor plate will be supplied for a Government conducted test and evaluation program. The plate will be subjected to ballistic evaluation, corrosion testing to include coatings compatibility, accelerated corrosion testing, adhesion, and suscep tibility to stress corrosion cracking. Evaluation of welds will include, weldabilty with AA5183 weldment, mechanical/strength tests of the weld and corrosion testing of welded sections. The system selected must already be in production to allow for the abo ve integration/test effort as detailed above. This market survey is for information purposes only; this is not a Request for Quotations. No solicitation document exists. All interested firms, regardless of size, are encouraged to respond to this request fo r information. Responses may be sent via email to RMAC-Adelphi@arl.army.mil. The technical point of contact for this RFI is Mr. Brian E. Placzankis, 410-306-0841. The due date for submittals is April 30, 2004.
