Description
The purpose of this Sources Sought Notice is to identify potential sources of novel materials that may be capable of mitigating the effects of packaged explosive commodities intended for military use. Desired materials must be lightweight and capable of being fabricated for weapon packaging applications at a reasonable cost. Materials currently being examined for this application include fibers such as S2 glass, synthetic fibers, pumice, glass composite armor, fiber-metal laminates, and metallic foams. Additional materials or variations of these materials, having the potential of possessing the desired properties are being sought for assessment. Current objective is to design a lightweight container, approximately fifty (50) pounds and eight (8) cubic feet in size that is capable of containing the blast effects of one pound of C-4. The proposed container is to demonstrate cap ability only, i.e. mitigation/containment of blast impulse and shock waves. Continued research will be conducted to develop a practical technology. Future efforts include examining promising materials that will contain both blast and fragmentation effects of a packaged explosive item. Please appropriately and precisely mark all proprietary information to be submitted in response to this source request notice. In any response to be submitted to this notification, the following information is desired for any material being considered: 1. Specific Strength (tensile strength x 10^3 / specific gravity) 2. Mechanical properties 3. Fabrication and Manufacturing characteristics. 4. Cost 5. Current product applications 6. Flammability characteristics 7. Electrical properties Interested parties are encouraged to submit information to: NSWC Indian Head Division, Detachm ent Earle, Naval PHST Center, ATTN: Mark Heinrichs, 201 Highway 34 South, Colts Neck, NJ 07722 This notification represents a Sources Sought Notice only and shall not be construed as a Request for Proposal or as an obligation on the part of the United States Government.
