Description
Reference-Number-USAARL-04-HEARING. POC: William A. Ahroon, Principal Investigator, e-mail: william.ahroon@us.army.mil. This is a Market Survey in support of the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL). The USAARL is conducting a revi ew of hearing protection technologies in order to define acceptable performance requirements for use Army warfighters. Concepts and technologies identified through this survey will be considered for incorporation into subsequent research testing programs. Results of these tests will be used to define biomedically-based performance standards for hearing protection and communication. U.S. Army soldiers are required to operate in many different noise environments. Some of these environments are predictable (e.g., tactical vehicles) while others are unpredictable (e.g., explosive events). Pre- and post-combat activities may involve transportation in a noisy tactical vehicle to and from the site of action. During combat, the warfighter is exposed to high le vels of impulse noise from friendly and opposing forces weapons systems. Exposure to high levels of continuous noise from tactical vehicles or high peak levels of impulsive noise from weapons systems has immediate consequences on the unprotected auditory system. Soldiers can expect significant changes in hearing as the result of these exposures. While the immediate loss of hearing sensitivity may be temporary and eventually recover to pre-exposure levels, the temporary hearing loss imposes an immediate t hreat to the operational effectiveness of the Soldier. The USAARL is seeking information on innovative concepts for improving hearing protection and communication for the mounted and dismounted warfighter with the following characteristics: 1) hearing pr otection from steady-state noises typical in tactical vehicles (e.g., M2A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle, UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter) (which may be supplemented by double hearing protection strategies); 2) hearing protection from high-level impulse noise gener ated by weapons systems and explosive devices; 3) maintenance of situational awareness including the ability to accurately localize sound in azimuth and elevation; 4) ability to maintain face-to-face and radio communications during low- and high-intensity operations; 5) compatibility with military headgear; 6) compatibility with warfighting activities; 7) low power requirements; and 8) low maintenance and long service life. Interested sources should electronically submit literature/brochures describing the ir concepts using MS Word-, MS Excel-, and MS PowerPoint-compatible formats to William Ahroon, e-mail address william.ahroon@us.army.mil, NLT 30 days after the posted date. POC for this action is William Ahroon, Principal Investigator, telephone number (3 34) 255-6828. This is a market survey requesting information only. No solicitation will be issued against this notice. If a formal solicitation is generated at a later date, a solicitation notice will be published. Respondents should submit appropriate information within 30 days of this publication. All information is to be submitted at no cost or obligation to the Government. The Government reserves the right to reject, in whole or in part, any private sector input as a result of this market survey. Telephone requests are not acceptable.
