Description
The Communications and Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC), Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) has proposed a four-year, limited funding Science and Technology Objective (STO) program to begin fiscal year 2005. The objective of this STO will be to determine the feasibility of locating IED threats along routes in urban environments through explosives detection. To support this program, NVESD will conduct a workshop to discuss the scientific and engin eering challenges associated with the STO objective. In particular, NVESD is interested in evaluating the best approaches to quantitatively characterize the chemical signature of typically encountered IED threats. Additionally, NVESD is interested in det ermining if existing or slightly modifiable sampling and sensing techniques can be effectively applied to the challenge of IED detection. NVESD has tentatively scheduled this one-day workshop for 1 July 2004. Please consider attending this workshop and co nsult your calendar to determine if this proposed date is available. NVESD will outline and discuss the currently proposed STO. This workshop is open to U.S. citizens only. You are invited to present an unclassified 15-20 minute briefing on the research that you or your organization conducts that may be relevant to the STO program. Presentation should focus on scientific and engineering approaches to understanding the source signature, and how the Army might exploit that signature by leveraging existing sensing and sampling techniques. Also, presenters should consider potential avenues for collaboration with NVESD. Due to time constraints, some briefings may not be permitted. Presentation abstracts should be submitted no later than 14 June 2004 and sho uld be sent to the following email address: scott.grossman@nvl.army.mil. The workshop is scheduled to take place at the Institute for Defense Analyses. If you have any questions, please contact Scott Grossman on 703-704-2736, email: scott.grossman@nvl.ar my.mil, or Aaron LaPointe, 703-704-1827, email: aaron.lapointe@nvl.army.mil.
