Description

This research should take an empirical approach to assessing the differences between rural and non-rural small businesses with regard to various measures of economic growth and performance. Hypotheses should be developed to address topics such as the number and growth of small business firms, small business employment, business cycle performance, or finance issues dealing with credit availability and capital access, among others. Analysis of rural small business issues should ideally investigate the differences across the states in small business performance as well as identify differences between rural and non-rural firms. This approach would integrate an analysis of state policies that affect rural small business development as well as regional differences across the U.S. Furthermore, the research will ideally identify the part rural small businesses play in state economic growth. The research proposal should carefully identify data sources and methodology as well as testable hypotheses. The duration of this project will be 12 months from the date of award.
