Description
Fast growth companies are a small percentage of all companies but are often believed to be the engine of growth. While a lot of hype associated with fast growth companies exists, there needs to be more concrete results showing their status and value in the economy. Research is needed to determine their distribution by industry, at what age they tend to grow, is their growth internal versus acquisition, what percentage of the business population they represent, how they financed their growth, business characteristics and how they fit into our economy (or economic growth). Equal attention needs to be on fast shrinking firms to determine if these were recent fast growers and do the fast growers essentially net out the fast shrinkers. Considering much of the results could be based on the definition created to define fast growth, various definitions will be needed to compare how the definition affects the results (growing by an amount within a certain time frame, like doubling or reaching a certain growth level within a certain time frame). To conduct this research, a longitudinal database of firms over time with a size indicator(s) needed. Researchers can procure special tabulations using the Statistics of U.S. Business program at the U.S. Census Bureau (http://www.census.gov/csd/susb/susb.htm) or obtain access to another longitudinal database. Focusing on venture capital portfolios is another possible datasource, but it is worried that this method would focus too much on the few firms that have growth from initial public offerings. Data costs will be borne by the researcher and should be reflected in the cost of the proposal. The duration of this project will be 12 months from the date of award. The Solicitation document will be posted 6/8/2004. No other documents will be issued. THIS IS A 100% SMALL BUSINESS SET A-SIDE. NOTE: THIS NOTICE WAS NOT POSTED TO WWW.FEDBIZOPPS.GOV ON THE DATE INDICATED IN THE NOTICE ITSELF (03-JUN-2004); HOWEVER, IT DID APPEAR IN THE FEDBIZOPPS FTP FEED ON THIS DATE.
