- Description
- TACOM-Picatinny has a requirement for conducting microscopy analysis on ballistic material fragments. The technical elements of the work to be performed by the contractor are as follows: The objective of this effort is to investigate effects of pre-existing microstructure/ defect substructures on deformation and failure mechanisms of tungsten- based penetrator material. Relations between twinning shear localization (shear banding), dynamic recrystallization, cleavage and flow zone will be investigated. Prospects of tungsten cleavage alteration by alloying or impurity content such as oxygen would be studied. Variations in single-crystal crystallographic orientations could confirm verification of flow mechanisms/hypothesis. Specific research approaches and analyses, which are to be pursued but not necessarily limited to only the following: Microscopic mapping of complete projectile-in-target microstructures using optical metallography, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) where necessary and practical. Additional, more specific information will be contained within the Request for Quotation (RFQ), which is anticipated to be released on or about 6/24/04. It is the Government's intention to award this requirement sole source to the University of Texas at El Paso. Note 5 and 22 apply.
