The U S Naval Academy has a requirement for services for the following: The Chemistry Department requires a chemist, with a strong instrumental background, to help setup undergraduate chemistry laboratories in newly renovated laboratory spaces. The contract shall start 2 August 2004 and shall not exceed sixty (60) days. While some flexibility in work hours is possible, required core hours are 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM; some overtime may be required. The primary duties of the position shall be to disassemble, prepare for shipping, unpack, setup, tune, and calibrate (to manufacturer?s specifications) portions of the Department?s inventory of analytical instrumentation. The contract requires familiarity with the theory and practical operation of many of the following instruments: chromatographs (gas and high performance liquid), spectrophotometers (Fourier-transform infra-red, UV-visible, Raman, Fluorescence, atomic absorption, atomic emission), polarimeters, refractometers, mass spectrometers (quadruple and time-of-flight design), various electrochemical devices, centrifuges, microscopes, electrophoresis apparatus, inert atmosphere glove boxes, high vacuum lines, electronic balances and pH meters. The individuals assigned must be able to read/understand manufacturer?s instrument maintenance/service manuals and work with knowledgeable faculty members and instrument manufacturer representatives as needed. Computer skills are a necessity as many of the above instruments are computer interfaced. Occasional lifting of heavy (50 pounds) instrument components and sliding of heavier (up to 100 pounds) components is required. Day to day direction of assignments shall be provided by the laboratory manager and the department chair or his appointee. Assistance may also be required to help set up laboratory stations, help setup a chemical inventory system (segregate by hazard class and bar code) and prepare materials for laboratories. 2 Each.
