Description

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) intends to negotiate a Sole Source contract with Virtek Laser Systems Inc. The Government intends to solicit and negotiate with only one source under the Authority of FAR 6.302 and 15.002. Award will be made on a sole source basis to provide an integrated, computer controlled laser engraving system. The system will be a precision Computer Numerical Control (CNC) based machine tool that is capable of performing the final engraving operations for each note position on a full-size, electroformed nickel currency plate. The engraved features that the Laser Pantograph System will produce require x-y positioning accuracy of ? 12 microns and the capability to generate engraved lines with typical depths in the 50-80 micron range. A further capability of the system is that the laser engraved lines, with nominal line widths of 100 microns, will be produced without requiring additional/manual finishing operations to remove burrs or other surface anomalies on the plate that resulted from the laser engraving process. The resultant contract will exceed the simplified acquisition threshold and the procedures set forth in FAR Part 15 shall be used.
