Description

The U.S. Postal Service is soliciting proposals from prequalified contractors for the elevator upgrade project at the Van Nuys Main Office. The project consists of completely refurbishing the existing two-stop hydraulic elevator. The basic work includes replacing the elevator controllers with microprocessor controls, replacing the hydraulic power unit, replacing the hydraulic cylinder/plunger assembly, replacing the door operators, replacing the cab, replacing the car operating fixtures, replacing the hatchway wiring and switches, replacing the leveling units, and replacing the traveling cables. A sump is to be constructed in the elevator pit to allow for removal of any accumulated liquids. In conjunction with the elevator upgrade, the fire alarm system for the elevator equipment room, hoistway, pit, and lobbies is to be brought up to current code requirements. In addition, the fire sprinkler system for the equipment room, hoistway and pit is to be installed with isolation valves and tamper switches. Electrical work includes the installation of a shunt-trip breaker for the mechanical equipment, fusible disconnect switches, and GFCI outlets. Estimated cost range is $90,000 to $110,000. The work is to be completed within 120 calendar days from the notice to proceed date.
