- NOTICE OF INTENT TO NEGOTIATE A SOLE SOURCE CONTRACT WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA-SAN DIEGO SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY (SCRIPPS) FOR THE NATIONAL MARINE FISHERIES SERVICE, SOUTHWEST FISHERIES SCIENCE CENTER (SWFSC). PURPOSE OF PROPOSED CONTRACT IS TO 1) SORT FISH EGGS, LARVE, AND FISH JUVENILES CAPTURED IN BONGO AND MANTA NET TOWS TAKEN DURING THE 2001 ORCAWALE AND 2002 HICEAS PROJECTS; 2) PRESERVE AND ARCHIVE SPECIMENS SORTED AND IDENTIFIED FROM THE SAMPLES IN SEPARATE VIALS WITH ACCURATE AND COMPLETE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR LABELS; AND 3) KEEP ACCURATE RECORDS OF EACH SAMPLE FOR ENTRY INTO A DATABASE. SCRIPPS MAINTAINS APPROXIMATELY TWO MILLION PRESERVED SPECIMENS REPRESENTING MORE THAN 5,300 SPECIES OF FISHES, WHICH REPRESENT OVER TWENTY PERCENT OF THE WORLD?S SPECIES. THE COLLECTION MAINTAINS WORLDWIDE HOLDINGS OF DEEP-SEA AND PELAGIC FISHES AS WELL AS EXTENSIVE HLDINGS OF SHORE FISHES FROM THE ENTIRE EASTERN PACIFIC AND A NUMBER OF FISHES FROM HAWAII. COLLECTION DATA ARE AVAILABLE ON AN ONLINE SEARCHABLE DATABASE. PERSONNEL AT SCRIPPS HAVE EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SYSTEMATICS OF PACIFIC FISHES. PHILIP HASTINGS HAS PUBLISHED OVER FIFTY PAPERS DEALING WITH SYSTEMATICS, EVOLUTION AND BEHAVIOR OF FISHES. H.J. WALKER HAS DESCRIBED EIGHT SPECIES OF FISHES NEW TO SCIENCE AND HAS PUBLISHED SIXTEEN PAPERS, EIGHT OF WHICH DEAL WITH ARVAL FISHES. CYNTHIA KLEPADLO HAS DISCOVERED AT LEAST SIX NEW SPECIES OF DEEP-SEA FISHES, HAS RECENTLY PUBLISHED A PAPER ON A RARE DEEP-SEA SPECIES OCCURRING IN THE NEARSHORE AND HAS WORKED IN FISH TAXONOMY FOR TWENTY YEARS. THIS IS A SIMPLIFIED ACQUISITION WITH AN ESTIMATED VALUE OF LESS THAN $100,000.
