Description
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute (NCI), Laboratory of Cell Biology (LCB) plans to procure on a sole source basis a Mosquito nano-liquid handling robot for crystallization instrument with Molecular Dimensions, Inc, PO Box 1001, Apopka, Florida 32704. The supplies and services herein are being procured in accordance FAR Part 12. The North American Industry Classification System Code is 334516 and the business size standard is 500 employees. The National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, Laboratory of Cell Biology, Macromolecular Crystallography Unit studies structure and function of macromolecular assemblies, especially those related to cancer development, treatment, and prevention, primarily using X-ray crystallographic methodology and requiring a facility for protein crystal growth, for X-ray diffraction experiment and for data collection. X-ray crystallography is the most dominant method in elucidating macromolecular structures at atomic resolution and plays an essential role in our understanding of biological function of proteins at molecular resolution. In order to obtain structural information of a target protein by X-ray diffraction, protein crystals must be obtained. Our project focuses on the crystallization and structure determination of integral membrane proteins involved in cellular multi-drug resistance (MDR). In order to expedite the process of structural determination of proteins, or membrane proteins in particular, the robotic approach has been widely used among many structural genomics centers, and the crystallization community is shifting to using 96-well microtitre plates in a sitting drop format to increase throughput. We would like to purchase a liquid handling robot for setting up 96-well crystallization plates, either in sitting drop or in hanging drop, or in micro-batch format. The benefits of having a crystallization robot would greatly increase our efficiency in searching large number of crystallization conditions, providing much improved consistency and accuracy with less protein sample (< 0.1 l), and decreasing the time needed to grown highly ordered membrane protein crystals and thus increasing our competitiveness in the field. Molecular Dimensions, Inc designs and manufactures equipment and reagents, and package these products specifically for protein crystallization experiments. Mosquito is an exciting new technology for liquid handling that combines the performance of fixed tip dispensers with the convenience of disposable pipettes. Using positive displacement pipetting, Mosquito can dispense volumes from 50 n1 to 1200 nl precisely and reliably, over a wide range of fluid viscosities, and even handle suspensions of beads or cells. Because each micropipette is disposable, Mosquito offers guaranteed, zero cross-contamination of samples and removes the need for time-consuming and expensive solvent wash cycles. Mosquito technology combines the liquid transfer capability of a positive displacement, fixed head pipettor with the convenience and zero cross-contamination of disposable tips. The mosquito has a single reel of standard mosquito tape carrying 36,000 tips, a plate capacity for the crystallography deck containing 2 SBS-format plate positions and a single column position, a pippet pitch of 4.5mm for 384 and 1536 well plates or 9mm for 96 well plates with tip reach of 13 mm. Molecular Dimension, Inc., is the only source known to the NCI that can provide the aforementioned instrument. This is not a request for competitive quotation. However, if any interested party believes it can perform the above requirement, it may submit a statement of capabilities. The statement of capabilities and any other furnished information must be in writing and must contain material in sufficient detail to allow NCI to determine if the party can perform this requirement. Capability statements must be received in the contracting office by 1:00 PM EST, August 6, 2004. If you have questions they must be submitted in writing to Malinda Holdcraft, Purchasing Agent, at holdcram@exchange.nih.gov or by fax 301-402-4513. A determination by the Government not to compete this proposed requirement based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Government. Information received will be considered solely for the purpose of determining whether to conduct a competitive procurement. Solicitation number must be cited on all correspondence, NCI-40114-NG.
