Description
The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. ("AURA") is seeking qualified vendors to develop a conceptual design and risk analysis for a lab demonstration of a pulsed Raman fiber laser ("PRFL") at the sodium D2 wavelength of 589 nm. The specifications for the demonstration include an average output power of from 15 to 20 watts, beam quality no worse than 1.2 times diffraction limited, linear polarization, and a line width of from 0.5 to 3 Ghz. A variety of pulse formats are under consideration, such as (i) a pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of ~1kHz and a duty cycle of about 15 per cent, or (ii) more complex pulse trains consisting of 3-6 msec pulses with an overall duty cycle of 1-2 per cent. The demonstration is intended to assess the suitability and maturity of this class of lasers for use in astromical laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics (AO). The design study will be performed in parallel with the European Southern Observatory ("ESO"), which will release its own RFP for a second PRFL conceptual design effort. The full requirements for this procurement, and instructions for submitting a bid, will be given in a Request for Proposals (RFP) to be released in approximately one month. Firms that are interested in receiving this RFP should email a request to Andrew Flach, Gemini Contracts Manager, at aflach@gemini.edu by no later than 31 August 2004. The subject line of the email should reference N241211 and the body of the email should include the your company?s name and address, and the email address, phone number, and fax number of a contact person at your firm. All requests will be acknowledged within 48 hours, so please call Andrew Flach at 520-318-8410 if you have not received an acknowledgment in this timeframe.
