Description
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) intends to negotiate on a non-competitive basis with Wake Forest University School of Medicine for continuation of the Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study (WHIMS). WHIMS is an ancillary study to the WHI Hormone Trials. It is designed to study probable dementia, mild cognitive impairment, and global cognitive functioning in women 65 years of age and older participating in the E+P or E-alone hormone therapy trials. Since the initiation of WHIMS in 1996, a total of 7,526 participants have been recruited, examined and followed to determine whether taking hormones (estrogen alone or estrogen plus progestin) would slow the decline of cognitive function in postmenopausal women. Previous funding was provided by Wyeth Ayerst Pharmaceuticals. The primary goals of the proposed continuation are (1) to complete the originally planned follow-up among women in the WHIMS E-only trial (2) continue the post-trial follow-up among women formerly enrolled in the WHIMS E+P trial to establish the impact of the cessation of E+P therapy on cognitive outcomes; and (3) provide analytical support to vigorously explore and publish WHIMS data. The statutory authority applicable to this solicitation is 41 U.S.C. 253(c)(1) as set forth in FAR 6.302.1. The incumbent has the unique capability to provide the required services to the NHLBI. See NOTE 22. NOTE: THIS NOTICE MAY HAVE POSTED ON WWW.FEDBIZOPPS.GOV ON THE DATE INDICATED IN THE NOTICE ITSELF (09-OCT-2003). IT ACTUALLY APPEARED OR REAPPEARED ON THE FEDBIZOPPS SYSTEM ON 16-AUG-2004, BUT REAPPEARED IN THE FTP FEED FOR THIS POSTING DATE. PLEASE CONTACT fbo.support@gsa.gov REGARDING THIS ISSUE.
