- NAICS Code: 541710 THIS IS A PRE-SOLICITATION SYNOPSIS FOR STUDENT LABORATORY SERVICES TO BE HIRED ON A CONTRACT BASIS BY THE US ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY. The solicitation number is UKE066 (RFQ-RT-04-00521). The Ecosystems Research Division (ERD), Athens, GA, of the National Exposure Research Laboratory, Office of Research and Development, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, is seeking one student or recent graduate in an environmental science, chemistry, biology, or a related discipline to provide services under a contractual agreement in support of a research project that is evaluating and developing indicator tools to diagnose aquatic ecosystem stress due to organic waste enrichment and contamination and also conducting research to better understand the underlying ecosystem properties and processes upon which the indicators are based. The Government will make the contract award based on the student's work experience, knowledge and skills, training and course work (GPA and number of course hours) as it relates to the services described in this Announcement. Specifically, the preferred student or recent graduate will be expected to perform a range of chemical analyses and participate in field sampling of water, sediments, and soil. For additional information regarding ERD, visit its home page at http://www.epa.gov/athens/. The student or recent graduate contractor will assist the mentor in collecting and analyzing water, sediment, and soil samples for physical and chemical parameters that are being evaluated as indicators of aquatic ecosystem stress due to organic waste and nutrient enrichment. Tasks to be performed include, but are not limited to: (1) gas chromatographic analyses of methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide in field and laboratory samples; (2) ion chromatographic analyses of anions and cations in stream samples; (3) assist in preparing samples for stable isotope analyses; and (4) assist in collecting field samples and performing laboratory incubations. All necessary instructions and training regarding the chemical analyses and field sampling will be provided by Dr. Roger Burke, who will also serve as the mentor. This work is to begin on or about November 1, 2004. It is anticipated that the student or recent graduate will work 20 to 25 hours per week during the school year and 40 hours per week during the summer if a student and about 30 hours a week if not a student. The initial contract will be for one year with an option for one additional year. The duty location is Ecosystems Research Division, NERL, 960 College Station Road, Athens, GA 30605. The hourly rate for this position is $12.30. All technical questions are to be forwarded via email to the Contract Specialist Rebecca Clausen at the following e-mail address: clausen.rebecca@epa.gov.
