- Description
- NAICS Code: 541710 THIS IS A PRE-SOLICITATION SYNOPSIS FOR STUDENT LABORATORY SERVICES TO BE HIRED ON A CONTRACT BASIS BY THE US ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY. The solicitation number is 14RM10 (RFQ-RT-05-00002). The Ecological Exposure Research Division (EERD), Cincinnati, OH, of the National Exposure Research Laboratory, Office of Research and Development , U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Florida Integrated Science Center, is seeking to hire an individual that has recently completed an advanced graduate (MA/MS or doctorate) degree from an accredited institution to provide full time services under a contractual agreement in support of genetics research on invasive species and molecular taxonomy. The candidate should have completed or should be in the process of completing a doctoral degree in Biology or a related sub-discipline such as Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Environmental Sciences, Geology, Zoology or Botany. The preferred candidate will possess skills/experience in molecular biology or genetics laboratory work, particularly work involving aquatic organisms. The preferred candidate will also have experience in general laboratory practices, including health and safety practices. The Molecular Ecology Research Branch (MERB) of EERD is responsible for developing genetics-based indicators of exposure to environmental stressors as well as approaches for assessing ecological condition. Invasive species represent an important, but poorly characterized environmental stressor. MERB has recently initiated an invasion biology research program to better understand the impact of invasive species on the environment. For more information refer to the EERD website: http://www.epa.gov/nerl/eerd. The student will work within a multi-disciplinary research team, but will be directly mentored by Dr. Michael Blum and Dr. Mark Bagley, the principle investigators (PIs) of the MERB invasion biology research program. The student will also interact and work closely with researchers at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Portland State University and the University of California at Davis. The student will provide technical laboratory and field support for research projects focusing on (1) colonization of Pacific coast estuaries and the Great Lakes by aquatic invasive species (2) the development of diagnostic molecular markers to screen ship ballast for aquatic invasive species (3) exploratory characterization of species diversity in ship ballast using molecular techniques (ie. molecular taxonomy of ballast communities) (4) subsequent exploratory application of molecular taxonomy approaches to resident aquatic communities. Specific duties will support and assist the PIs with all work involved with the development and completion of these tasks. Work involved with the tasks include, but are not limited to: (1) aquacultural hatching of resting stage eggs and rearing of subsequent broods until maturity (2) tissue and sample collection and organization (3) DNA extractions (4) PCR amplification and purification (5) Genotyping (6) DNA sequencing (7) Analysis and characterization of genotype and DNA sequence data (8) manuscript and publication preparation (9) other general laboratory and field duties necessary to carry out research (ie. sample collection and transport, routine equipment maintenance). Work is to begin in November, 2004. The contract will be for one year. All questions are to be forwarded via email to the Contract Specialist at the following e-mail address: clausen.rebecca@epa.gov. Interested parties should review all material relevant to the requirement by looking under Request for Quotation section of the EPA's website at the following address: http://www.epa.gov/oam/rtp_cmd. These solicitation documents will be posted to that website October 19, 2004.
