- Description
- Explosive Detection System he Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory has developed the INEEL Explosive Detection System which is a non-intrusive, noncontact inspection technique that can, in 300 seconds, identify explosives hidden in a small cargo truck of similar vehicle. The system uses neutron technology in a portal-type configuration. The trucks or automobiles entering a government building parking garage, military base or embassy grounds, would be required to stop within the system's inspection zone. After the driver exits the vehicle, the INEEL process would begin. Using a technique called a Pulsed Thermal Neutron Analysis, the system uses high-energy neutron output to cause nuclear excitation of materials within the vehicle. The INEEL patent-pending system uses detectors to identify elements with the targeted cargo that indicate the presence of explosives. The INEEL system is quick, inexpensive and reliable, due in part to its simple, yet robust design that incorporates few moving parts that can break down. The system also monitors the health of its individual components, which allows the operator to quickly pinpoint potential problems and make adjustments For more information please contact: Tom Harrison Consulting Account Executive Technology Outreach Bechtel BWXT Idaho, LLC Telephone: (208) 526-1710 E-mail: harrtm@inel.gov
