- Description
- Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is looking for companies interested in supplying a cryostat for the National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX) (http://www.pppl.gov/projects/pages/ncsx.html). PPPL is operated by Princeton University under contract with the United States Department of Energy (DOE), and is the only US facility solely dedicated to magnetic confinement fusion energy research. NCSX is a DOE-funded research project currently authorized for construction at PPPL in Plainsboro, New Jersey. It is a collaborative effort between PPPL and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). NCSX is designed to operate at liquid nitrogen temperatures and, consequently, requires a cryostat (thermal and moisture barrier) to isolate it from the surrounding environment. The NCSX cryostat will consist of an array of fiberglass frames called ?insulation supports?. The supports, after fabrication but before assembly, will be filled with urethane foam insulation as part of the complete cryostat system. PPPL has posted a zip file of representative drawings in Adobe pdf format in the cryostat folder at the NCSX Manufacturing FTP site located at http://ncsx.pppl.gov/NCSX_MFG/welcome_to_the_ncsx_cryostat_man.htm. These drawings are representative of the eventual construction. The FTP site also contains a short slide presentation including computer-generated views of the NCSX cryostat assembly. PPPL wishes to obtain expressions of interest, fabrication recommendations and budgetary cost estimates for the insulation supports from qualified suppliers. Interested parties are requested to examine the drawings and provide responses by email to rtemplon@pppl.gov, or fax them to the attention of Rodney D. Templon at 609-242-2021. Include the words ?NCSX Cryostat Budgetary Estimate Response? in the document title. To be useful to PPPL in planning this work, responses should be received not later than Wednesday, November 10, 2004. Firms responding to this announcement will receive notification of availability when the NCSX Cryostat RFP is released. The current estimated RFP release date is February 11, 2005. This announcement is not an RFP. Neither Princeton University nor the U.S. Department of Energy will reimburse respondents for any costs incurred in preparation of response to this sources sought announcement.
