- Description
- In response to a solicitation issued on August 20, 2001 to conduct a ???Study of Potential Sites for the Deployment of New Nuclear Power Plants in the United States???, the Department of Energy received input from private sector firms that indicated interest in innovative uses of DOE property that could eventually lead to the construction of new commercial nuclear power plants in the United States. The concept of using DOE controlled real property for siting new Generation III+ light water reactor nuclear plants is of interest to the Department as it continues to explore ways of working with the private sector to realize the vision stated in the National Energy Policy - to expand the use of nuclear energy in the U.S. Pursuant to this goal, the Department would like to explore the level of industry interest in locating a Generation III+ commercial nuclear plant on leased federal property. The Department would like to receive proposed plans from interested U.S. electric utilities, power companies, or utility-led consortia that detail the proposed studies, activities, lease arrangements, or other measures the respondent believes would pave the way for the construction of a new advanced nuclear power plant on a DOE site. It should be emphasized that this notice is not a commitment by the Department to take any specific action regarding the use of federal land for a commercial nuclear power plant. Rather, it represents the first step in an exploratory process that will require the Department and the interested private firm to address and resolve a number of complex regulatory and legal issues prior to any decisions. No Federal funding will be provided under this announcement for the design, construction or operation of new nuclear power plants. Interested parties should respond to this announcement within three weeks of the publication date. All interested parties must demonstrate that they have the capabilities, experience and expertise to license, construct and operate a nuclear power plant. Companies must identify the proposed location for plant siting and/or future facilities. Publication of this announcement does not commit the DOE to a specific course of action. Responses should be sent to the attention of: Kenneth Chuck Wade, U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology, 1000 Independence Ave. NE-30, SW Washington DC 20585.
