Description

Argonne National Laboratory is looking for companies interested in participating in the construction of 40 undulators for the Linac Coherent Light Source (http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/lcls/). The Linac Coherent Light Source will be the world's first x-ray free electron laser (FEL) when it becomes operational in 2009. This is a United State –Department of Energy -funded project that is currently in the detailed project engineering and design phase. Design and construction are accomplished by a partnership of three Department of Energy national laboratories including the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center as home laboratory, together with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory. The start of construction is planned in FY2005. In a FEL, the actual lasing occurs as a result of the electron beam passing through a precision magnetic device called an undulator. Undulator construction is the responsibility of Argonne National Laboratory. The purpose of this notice is to identify and pre-qualify suppliers, interested in supplying the 40 forged, annealed and precision machined titanium strongbacks, each approximately 3400 mm long by 300 mm in diameter.
