Description
LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY SEEKS PARTNERSHIPS WITH INDUSTRY TO COMMERCIALIZE REAL-TIME MULTIPLICITY COUNTER AND FISSION METER Announcement: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is seeking one or more industrial partners to commercialize LLNL's real-time multiplicity counter and fission meter. Scientists at LLNL have invented a neutron detector that can be used to discriminate fissile material from non-fissile material. It consists of a low cost digital data acquisition unit that collects data at high rate, and in real-time processes large volumes of data directly into information that a first responder can use to discriminate materials. The standard approach to locating neutron sources is to use a neutron detector to look for count rate increases above background. Given the number of legitimate neutron sources used in industry, deploying standard neutron detectors will result in a large number of alarms that will need to be resolved by more intrusive inspections. LLNL has developed a simple way to discriminate the commonly used neutron sources from illicit (fissile) neutron sources. This technique functions in a passive mode much like a standard portal monitor. There are options for converting the technique to an active interrogation scheme. Government and commercial uses for this technology include mobile or stationary monitoring and characterization of the type of neutron sources inside packages. Some examples of uses include inspection of packed cargo containers and trucks. LLNL is in the process of patenting this invention. In the meantime, LLNL is seeking industrial partners to commercialize the invention. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's real-time multiplicity counter should provide a written statement of interest that includes: 1. Company name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. 3. Description of corporate capabilities relevant to commercializing the technology including any experience in analyzing nuclear materials. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization P.O. Box 808, L-795 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: FBO 99-05 Please provide your written statement within thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is published to ensure consideration of your interest.
