- Description
- The FAA is seeking information on PAPI systems with Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights. This will assist the FAA's investigation of using LEDs in approach lighting systems in the National Air Space (NAS). The information provided shall discuss how the LED PAPI system will meet the following requirements: Light beam: The Lamp Housing Assemblies (LHAs) of PAPI LED shall be able to provide a split beam of light consisting of white in the top sector and red light in the bottom sector. The transition from red light to white light shall occur within an angle of 3 minutes of arc at the beam center and within an angle of 5 minutes of arc at the beam edges. The transition band shall be flat to within 3 minutes of arc. Light intensity: Each PAPI unit shall meet the minimum intensity requirements as shown in figure 1 at the maximum intensity setting. Light color: The light colors shall be aviation white and aviation red. Light beam aiming tolerance: The centerline of the transition zone (i.e. the vertical area of change from red light to white) of each LHA projected light signal shall be parallel to the zero aiming angle projection within plus or minus five (5) minutes of arc. This shall be interpreted to mean that the projected vertical transition zone signal angle will be coincident with the LHA aiming angle to the tolerance stated, and is a measure of the aiming accuracy of the LHA/Aiming device combination. Potential offerors must provide the technical documentation that describe how the PAPI LED prototype that is available (or in development) meet these requirements above. For those requirements that are not met by this PAPI LED prototype, the FAA is interested in how easily the un-met requirements can be added and the time frame for such developmental activities. Advise whether the absent requirement is currently being developed through internal research and developmental (IR&D). From a future announcement the FAA may purchase developed prototypes for further testing. FAA anticipates using the information contained in your responses to refine its future PAPI requirements. FAA views this request as one of several additional market surveys. Proprietary information/data may be submitted and will be handled according to FAA procedures. All information should be submitted by April 24, 2005 to the attention of Mr. Troy Teachey, Federal Aviation Administration, 800 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, D.C. 20591. It is required that the submittals be 2 hard copies and in Microsoft Office 2003 software. If there are any questions with regard to this market survey please call Mr. Teachey at (202)267-7386.
