- NAICS Code: 541710 THIS IS A PRE-SOLICITATION SYNOPSIS FOR STUDENT LABORATORY SERVICES TO BE HIRED ON A CONTRACT BASIS BY THE US ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY. The solicitation number is U4RD31 (RFQ-RT-05-00171). The Ecological Exposure Research Division (EERD), Cincinnati, OH, of the National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) and the Land Remediation and Pollution and Control Division (LRPCD) of the National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) Office of Research and Development, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, are seeking a graduate student enrolled in an accredited institution near Clemson S.C. The student will, provide services under a contractual agreement in support of contaminated sediments research on Lake Hartwell and Twelve Mile Creek, South Carolina. The student should be pursuing a Ph. D. degree in Biology or a related sub-discipline such as ecotoxicology, molecular biology, biochemistry, ecology, environmental sciences or a degree in chemistry or hydrology.. The preferred student will possess skills/experience in field collections in aquatic ecosystems including. Experience should include collecting water and sediment samples for chemical analyses, and biological sampling for taxa ranging from phytoplankton to fishes, aquatic organism deployment, and biomarker field and laboratory work. The preferred student will also have experience in general laboratory practices, including health and safety practices. The EERD, is responsible for developing ecologically and genomic-based indicators of ecological condition and to characterize exposure and impacts of different environmental stressors. LRPCD conducts research at the basic level as well as bench- and pilot-scale to explore innovative solutions to current and future land pollution problems. Contaminated sediments are chemical and physical stressors that EERD and LRPCD have been investigating through several independent projects. The student contractor will assist in performing tasks involved with water, sediment and biological collection and deployment as well as the maintenance of equipment and instrumentation. Additional tasks will be data entry and organization, general laboratory and field. All necessary instructions and training will be provided by Drs. Jim Lazorchak, Marc Mills or David Walters who will also serve as the student mentor. This work is to begin on or about April 1, 2005. It is anticipated that the student will work 20 to 30 hours per week but not necessarily every week during the course of the project. The contract period will be for one year, with the option of an additional year. The duty location will be at Clemson University, SC. Work will be performed under a variety of settings including office, laboratory, and field. The work will have some physical activity that is related to normal field and laboratory conditions. Field health and safety training will be provided. The hourly rate ($26.05/hour) for this position is based on the student actively pursuing a Ph. D. degree from an accredited university. Student contractors will be paid the basic hourly rate only for the number of hours worked and do not receive overtime premium. Student contractors do not accrue leave or holiday benefits and are not paid for any non-work days, regardless of the reason. Federal, State, Local, and Social Security taxes will not be withheld; student contractors are responsible for reporting income to authorities and paying all taxes.
