Description
BACKGROUND: Professional services are requested as Course Coordinator for the China Intensive Regional Area Studies Course (AR-250). Courses are held at the Foreign Service Institute, 4000 Arlington Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia 22204. The China Intensive Area Studies Course is organized by an area specialist who brings in area experts from universities, government and private organizations. The seminar combines lectures, discussions, participatory activities by class members, readings, and audio-visual materials in order to highlight the key historical, political, economic, and socio-cultural themes for each region as well as American interests and policy issues in China. PURPOSE: The goal of Area Studies is to prepare United States Government personnel to better understand, interpret, and affect international affairs as a result of the knowledge, skills, and motivation gained from participation in Area Studies courses. Contract tasks to be performed: * arrange and conduct the China Intensive Regional Area Studies Course for the two-week period; * meet with the Coordinator for Asian Studies during the last week of March (or earliest possible) to discuss current course and administrative issues; * submit a complete course schedule and syllabus on the Friday which is 17 days prior to start of each course offering (April 8, 2005) which includes lectures, topics, activities, and specific reading on China; * select and recommend appropriate teaching aids, including books, articles, and audio-visual materials to be used in the course; * attend class sessions; * introduce guest lecturers; * lead class discussions; * present study materials; * prepare lecture presentations part of the China Intensive Regional Area Studies Course; * select and arrange for guest lectures by recognized authorities from government, academic, diplomatic and business fields, as appropriate to whom the State Department will pay honorarium and related expenses when administratively approved; * counsel students on information sources and other matters related to their professional geographic interests; * maintain a regular record of student attendance in the classroom on the roster provided by assuring that all participants sign in twice daily; * return the roster to the Area Studies Program Assistant at the end of the seminar; * ensure that hand-outs and reading materials for the participants are given to the support secretary two weeks in advance; * arrange to send out letters of invitation and honoraria to guest speakers; submit letters of honoraria to the support staff three weeks in advance to allow processing time for payment and for the letters to be received by the lecturer before the agreed upon date; * advise the support staff in Area Studies immediately when there is a change of speakers or program; * contractor may be called upon during the course of the contract to perform other tasks of similar technical complexity; * remain within the allotted dollar budget for the course.
