Description
Special Notice: Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV) Power Systems Workshop UUV Power Systems Workshop, SN05-18. The Defense Sciences Office (DSO) of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is sponsoring an informational/teaming workshop for a potential new DARPA UUV Power Systems program. This potential program would explore innovative technologies for enabling future long duration UUV missions. Current UUV missions are limited to several hours to several days due to the energy storage limitations of the batteries used for propulsion and payload power systems. DARPA/DSO recognizes that extending future UUV missions from several days to several weeks will require innovative UUV system designs as well as major advances in energy storage and power generation technologies. Of particular interest to this potential program are hybrid approaches that combine advanced power generation and energy storage technologies with multifunctional concepts that integrate energy storage with UUV structural materials and components. Innovative and revolutionary materials, subsystems and systems design/integration/configuration concepts are strongly encouraged. The workshop will be held at the Turf Valley Resort located in Ellicott City, Maryland on April 20, 2005. The goals of the workshop are: (a) introduce the research community (industry, academia, and Government) to the UUV Power Systems program vision and goals; and (b) encourage and promote teaming arrangements among potential research organizations that have the relevant expertise, facilities, and capabilities for executing a research and development program responsive to the UUV Power Systems program goals. The workshop will include overview presentations by Government personnel and a poster session to facilitate interaction and team building among the workshop participants. Additionally, a teaming website is provided to facilitate these interactions and can be found at http://www.sainc.com/UUVPowerTeaming/ Appropriate teaming will be a critical element in responding to an anticipated DARPA UUV Power Systems solicitation. Workshop participants are strongly encouraged to prepare posters describing areas of capabilities in order to facilitate communications, interactions, and teaming discussions during the poster session. A maximum of 25 4ft. by 4 ft. posters can be accommodated. Workshop details (including registration information) are given on the UUV Power Systems website at http://www.eventmakeronline.com/dso/view/index.asp?meetingid=329 The password is UUV2005. The workshop registration fee is $75.00 and includes all workshop activities. Registration is limited by the venue capacity (maximum of 100 attendees) and early registration is strongly recommended. The registration cutoff date is Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 5 pm EST, or at attendance capacity, whichever comes first. DARPA/DSO anticipates, but cannot guarantee, that a solicitation will follow the workshop. Further administrative information is available from Michelle Mann (mannm@sainc.com). Additional technical information can be obtained from Valerie Browning (vbrowning@darpa.mil) or Leo Christodoulou (lchristodoulou@darpa.mil). Please refer to the UUV Power Systems workshop in correspondence. This announcement is not a request for proposals. No solicitation document is available at this time. Original Point of Contact Valerie Browning, DARPA Program Manager, Phone (703) 696-2287, Fax (703) 248-1837 or Leo Christodoulou, DARPA Program Manager, Phone (703) 696-2374, Fax (703) 741-1368.
