Description
Westinghouse Savannah River Company (WSRC), managing contractor of the Savannah River Site for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is soliciting expressions of interest from companies wishing to participate in a joint research project under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) to develop a thermochemical cycle for the production of hydrogen. The Hybrid Sulfur Process was first developed by Westinghouse Electric Corporation in the 1970s and 1980s. This process is one of a family of sulfur-based, closed-loop reaction cycles that have been proposed for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using thermal energy. Westinghouse?s early development effort progressed through a laboratory demonstration. SRNL has recently updated the Hybrid Sulfur Process flowsheet to today?s design standards, resulting in improved estimated net thermal efficiencies. SRNL is seeking industry partners to participate in a cooperative research and development project that would include laboratory-scale demonstration and evaluation of key process components, optimization of process design and operating parameters, and closed-cycle laboratory-scale demonstration. Initial efforts would lead to scale-up and testing of an SO2-depolarized electrolyzer, a key component in the Hybrid Sulfur Process. The goal of this joint research project, expected to last about three and a half years, is to complete sufficient design and proof-of-concept testing to advance the technology to the point of readiness for pilot-scale (about 1 MW energy input) plant construction and testing. If successfully demonstrated under this joint research project, the Hybrid Sulfur Process could be a candidate for a DOE-supported thermochemical hydrogen pilot-plant program, scheduled to begin in fiscal year 2009. Any company interested in participating in this research project must respond with a letter of interest (may be submitted by email) no later than April 21, 2005, summarizing the company?s business and technical expertise and motivation for pursuing this opportunity. Qualified companies will be provided with further information on the Hybrid Sulfur process. Such information may require an executed nondisclosure agreement. Questions and expressions of interest may be addressed to Jack Simon, Savannah River National Laboratory, Aiken, SC, 29808, (803) 819-8420, or via email at jack.simon@srnl.doe.gov. This is not a procurement; it is a request for parties interested in collaborative research opportunities only.
