- Description
- Industry Day Announcement for the BattleAxe Program on 12 Apr 05 at Eglin AFB FL. AFRL/MNMI?s BattleAxe Program Manager intends to host an Industry Day at Bldg 13, Eglin AFB, FL on 12 Apr 05. This meeting will review advancements made to date in developing reactive materials by the HERD facility, design experimentations of Shaped Charge Jet (SCJ) liners by the Advanced Warheads Experimentation Facility (AWEF), and the schedule, objectives, and funding of the BattleAxe Program. ?One-on-one? meetings between individual contractors and the Government for follow up discussions concerning the Industry Day agenda may also be scheduled for 12 Apr 05 or shortly thereafter. All arrangements, appointments, etc., including completion and submittal of a MAX worksheet (see Attachment) for on-base access, must be made with Lt Jonathan Foster no later than 6 Apr 05. Contact Lt Foster at jonathan.foster@eglin.af.mil, Phone (850) 882-2141 ext 2212, and fax 850-882-9790 for additional information. Background: AFRL/MN has been investigating Advanced Energetics for the past year. An enhanced blast impulse has been demonstrated over Insensitive Munition (IM) compliant explosives utilizing an advanced energetic reactive material. Additionally, the High Explosive Research and Development (HERD) facility, cooperatively with industry and other DoD and DoE laboratories, has been developing advanced energetic reactive fragments to defeat soft targets. This program will ascertain the advantage and disadvantages of various reactive materials via modeling analysis and testing and will incorporate the best material into the three kill mechanisms: blast, fragmentation, and a shaped charge jet. Program Objective: The objective of the BattleAxe Program is to develop, fabricate, and demonstrate a small, roughly 20-pound, ordnance package that will provide greater kill capability over a broad spectrum of targets than a conventional ordnance package of the same size. The BattleAxe warhead is expected to consist of three kill mechanisms: blast, fragmentation, and a shaped charge jet. These three defeat mechanisms must be seamlessly integrated into a functioning ordnance package. The addition of the chemical energy release of reactive materials will be assessed to enhance the kill capability of the ordnance package. The final integrated solution will be tested against national range targets and additional lethality of reactive materials quantified. Envisioned Phases/Contract Awards: BattleAxe is envisioned to have four phases. Phase One work is to begin and finish in FY06. Award of two Task Order (IDIQ) contracts is envisioned for demonstration of ?point of departure? warhead designs in this phase. After Phase I, it is expected that subsequent phases will be awarded to a single contractor. Phase Two work is to begin at the end FY06 and run through FY07. This phase will optimize a design from Phase One to a target set and will be tested against a simulated target. Phase Three work is to begin at the end of FY07 and end in FY08. This phase will spiral new technology into warhead design, refine modeling and simulation work to date, and demonstrate a new design against a range target. Phase Four work is to begin at the end of FY08 and run through FY09. This phase will spiral in new technology, test a new design against soft mobile target, and validate modeling and simulation work to date.
