Description
The U. S. Department of Education (ED), Office of Indian Education (OIE) intends to award a sole source purchase order to the Heritage Institute, 2305 Renard SE, Suite 200, Albuquerque, NM 87106. The national science bowl program is a national interscholastic science and math competition designed to encourage high school students to study mathematics and science disciplines and to pursue careers in math, science, engineering, and technology. The Native American Science Bowl (NASB), hosted by the Heritage Institute, is one of approximately 60 regional science bowls that participate in the national science bowl program. The NASB is the only regional program that explicitly provides an opportunity for high schools on Native American reservations and high schools serving Native American and Alaskan Native students to participate in this math and science enrichment program. The Office of Indian Education is planning to conduct a technical assistance workshop at the National Indian Science Bowl. The other services to be provided to ED/OIE by Heritage Institute include: 1) Meeting space for one workshop during the conference; 2) Convention registration for up to two representatives of the OIE staff. The Office of Indian Education, also, requires a contractor to collect, analyze and develop a compendium of program activities of the Native American Science Bowl and issues confronting American Indian and Alaska Native students within national mathematics and science enrichment programs. The contractor shall collect and analyze data on high schools and students participation in the Native American Science Bowl and the effect on the achievement gap at the participating high schools. Additionally, the contractor shall develop professional development strategies for teachers to increase the participation of American Indiana and Alaska Native students in mathematics and science enrichment programs. Heritage Institute holds an annual conference attended by American Indian and Alaska Native tribal representatives, educators, parents and students. The conference is attended by the largest single gathering of science American Indian and Alaska Native students and teachers, a majority of whom are grantees of the Office of Indian Education. For more information, contact Jeffrey D. Johnson, 400 Maryland Ave. SW, Washington DC, 20202, (202)205-9923, or jeff.johnson@ed.gov.
