Description
The Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (sanctuary) encompasses approximately 3,300 square miles off the Washington Coast, extending from Cape Flattery to the mouth of the Copalis River. Significant natural and cultural resources include 29 species of whales, dolphins and other marine mammals, large populations of nesting seabirds, Native American communities and archaeological sites and some of the last remaining wilderness coastline in the lower 48 states. The sanctuary provides resource protection through research, education and conservation programs that foster public understanding and stewardship of this nationally significant marine ecosystem. The sanctuary is required by law to periodically review its management plan to ensure that the sanctuary continues to best conserve, protect, and enhance its nationally significant living and cultural resources. The current management plan for the sanctuary was written in 1994 at the time of designation. Recent scientific discoveries, advancements in managing marine resources, and emerging resource management issues are not addressed in the existing plan. The sanctuary has begun planning for its upcoming management plan review process that will begin in September 2005. The sanctuary is in need of meeting support and facilitation services for a number of management plan review (MPR) related activities. The sanctuary anticipates starting MPR in September, 2005, with the release of a State of the Sanctuary report and community open houses in September 2005 and continuing with scoping meetings beginning in November 2005. The contract will consist of a base and two option years. This requirement will be 100% set-aside for small business. See Numbered Note 1.
