Description
Retaining qualified employees continues to be challenging for small businesses. The sixth edition of the Small Business Problems and Priorities published by the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) identified employee turnover as one of the problems that small businesses continue to encounter (http://www.nfib.com/object/IO_16191.html). The NFIB study found that keeping skilled employees is of more importance to small businesses in the construction and retail trade industries. In a previous study funded by the Office of Advocacy, half of all small firms with one to one hundred employees were seeking employees, two-thirds reported trouble hiring (see Labor Shortages, Needs and Related Issues in Small and Large Businesses by Joel Popkin and Company (Part A http://www.sba.gov/advo/research/rs195atot.pdf, Part B http://www.sba.gov/advo/research/rs195btot.pdf). The study also found that half of the companies looking to hire someone eventually hired someone less qualified than they were looking for.Advocacy is seeking research to understand the impact of employee compensation on small businesses and how small firms can lower the employee turnover rate. Questions and answers for this procurement shall commence on May 30, 2005 and end on June 7, 2005. No questions after June 7, 2005. Questions MUST be email to the Contracting officer (billy.jenkins@sba.gov). Fax proposals will not be accepted.
