- Nonpersonal servicess of professional scientist to design a basic science program that includess development of innovative diagnostic assays (including avidity assays), improving the Armys understanding of mechanistic interactions between virus and antibody, eliciting collaborative support from international experts to assemble a multi-disciplinary scientific agenda to better understand dengue and JE pathophysiology, and to seek competitive funding. Additional services include: (1) serving as liaiso n between the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Services (AFRIMS) and Thai institutions and collaborators including the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH); (2) Guide the Arbovirology Section to support the implementation of the Dengue Hemorrhagic Fe ver (DHF) Project conducted at the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health and the Dengue Prospective Study in Primary School Children and Villages in Kamphaeng Phet Province. Both studies are in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health ( MOPH) and University of Massachusetts under the direction of the U.S. Army Principal Investigators; (3) Guide the Arbovirology Section to support dengue vaccine studies in compliance with Departmental quality systems; (4) Work with the Chief, Department of Virology, the Arbovirology Consultant, and other Departmental investigators to analyze and publish data on epidemiology and vaccine-related studies of flavirirus infections in Thailand and Southeast Asia; (5) Produce manuscripts for peer-review journals t o promote a better understanding of dengue, JE, and other emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases; (6) Support as upcoming arbovirus surveillance study to monitor and characterize dengue-like illnesses and encephalitis in the Philippines; (7) Promote high-quality performane of laboratory assays within the arbovirology laboratories, relying on the development, adherence, and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs); (8) Review regularly the literature on arboviruses and promote an educational environment to enhance the applicability of the Departments research agenda to the literature; (9) Serve as a mentor to the technicians and technologists in the Arbovirology Section by encouraging skill development, providing appropriate training and adh ering to safety policies; and (10) Advise the Department Chief on scientific and administrative matters as called upon to do so. A five (5) year contract (a base year and four (4) option years) will be awarded. All responsible sources may submit an offer , which will be considered.
