Description
MARTIN'S DRAW STEWARDSHIP DESCRIPTION Martin's Draw is located in the southern part of the Big Horn Mountain Range, 13 miles northeast of Kaycee, Wyoming. This 17 acre stand of Ponderosa pine is declining due to the lack of health and vigor of the trees. These characteristics accompany an overmature stand and have, as a result, contributed to the decline of this stand and is an area of high fuel loads. Historically, fires have provided a method of controlling and contributing to the health and vigor of these forest stands by providing the silvicutultural treatments of thinning and natural selection of the most vigorous and healthy trees. However, this pattern of selection has been interrupted by fire control and suppression. The prescription involves selecting and marking 10-20 seed trees per acre. These trees will be selected for genetic components desirable for regeneration and the two components of; abundant seed production and tree location. The remainder of the Ponderosa pines would be harvested (3,000-6,000 BF per acre) and all logging slash placed into piles for burning (burning to be performed by BLM). There are areas of overstocking of Ponderosa pine seedlings produced by natural regeneration on this stand. Thinning of these seedlings and saplings will be incorporated into the fuel hazard reduction for this stand. Douglas fir seedlings and saplings will be the exceptions. This species will be considered the most desirable, and the trees will be marked to remain and eventually be the dominant species in the climax stage of this forest. Wyoming sawmills has completed extensive construction on the road system into and around this area. BENEFITS Several goals and objectives would be achieved in performing these management tasks. There would be a reduction in the fuel loads on this site. Though these fuels would be diminished, the ecological integrity of the stand would remain intact by providing a source of regeneration and maintaining the current stage of the seral regeneration (Douglas fir). Also, the competition would be reduced to allow for the development of healthy trees with adequate growing space. Leaving the seed trees would maintain the natural landscape pattern on Gardner mountain. The wood products would provide a resource for the local sawmill and the adjacent landowner. The landowner has in the past, had agreements with the BLM to remove wood products from this area.
