Description
NASA's Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD) Human System Research and Technology division (HSRT) is soliciting innovative concepts, ideas, technologies and research approaches for its Human-Systems Integration (HSI) research and technology program. The Human-Systems Integration program goal is to produce safe, efficient and effective flight crew systems and supporting ground operations. Human-centered design and operations and effective training will increase system maintainability, boost the efficiency of ground and flight crews, reduce human error, simplify human interaction and augment human productivity to improve safety and ensure mission success. The HSI program is driven by requirements, standards and other guiding documents including: the Bioastronautics Roadmap (www.bioastroroadmap.nasa.gov), the Human Ratings Requirements and Standards: NPR 8705.2 (www.hq.nasa.gov/office/codeq/doctree/87052.htm), Human Systems Integration Standards: NASA Standard 3000 ( http://msis.jsc.nasa.gov/ ), emerging Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD) program requirements, and other medical and operational requirements. The HSI program seeks inputs into any or all of the 10 related technical research areas listed in the attached document. We are particularly interested in innovative ideas and approaches that will change the face of human space exploration and enable NASA scientists, technologists and engineers to make timely and effective decisions for ESMD acquisition. These development efforts reach from the Crew Exploration Vehicle in Low Earth Orbit, through lunar surface exploration, to Mars and beyond. Specific ideas can range from Technology Readiness Levels 2 (technology concept and/or application formulated) to TRL 6 (system/subsystem model or prototype demonstration in a relevant ground or space environment). Fundamental science and technology challenges must be framed in a context that is traceable to the ESMD acquisition strategy. New concepts in human-robotic interaction are encouraged that exploit an integrated campaign of human and uncrewed missions. All relevant research and technology development approaches are solicited including laboratory experiments, field observations, Earth-based analog missions, integration and evaluation testbeds, flight tests, and other in-space evaluations and demonstrations. Structure of Submitted Responses Interested authors having the necessary capabilities are invited to submit white papers for any/all of the 10 related technical research areas discussed. All documents shall be delivered in an electronic format using Microsoft Word, PDF, or a text file through the ESMD web site https://ice.exploration.nasa.gov/Windchill/gov/nasa/esmd/web/jsp/hsi/rfi/rfiForm.jsp Font size should be no smaller than 12 point in Arial. Responses shall be no longer than 5 pages in length including supporting graphics but not including field-specific indexing information submitted in the web-based intake process. Key words that serve to identify important elements of the input should be highlighted for quick visibility. No Proprietary Concepts NASA reserves the right to use submitted responses for NASA internal planning and analysis concept development activities. Although details of responses are meant only for NASA use, response submitters should not submit proprietary material. Future Use of Responses This RFI is for information and planning purposes. No procurement is planned as a direct result of this Request for Information. This is not to be construed as a commitment by the Government nor will the Government pay for information solicited. Respondents will not be notified of the results of the evaluation. No solicitation exists; therefore, do not request a copy of the solicitation. If a solicitation is released it will be synopsized in FedBizOpps and on the NASA Acquisition Internet Service. It is the potential offeror?s responsibility to monitor these sites for the release of any solicitation or synopsis. Failure to respond to this RFI does not mean that a firm cannot respond to a solicitation at a later date. Technical questions regarding this RFI should be directed to: Bonnie Battaglia (202) 358-1816 or Bonnie.Battaglia-1@nasa.gov. Procurement related questions should be directed to: Rhett Herrera (202) 358-3633 or Rhett.A.Herrera@nasa.gov All responses to this notice shall be submitted no later than 6 pm EST on July 8, 2005. Please reference NNT05ESMDL-HSI in the title of the response.
