Applicants who are currently enrolled, or plan to enroll, in graduate level programs will be considered. The preferred student/recent graduate will have broad academic training and work experience in Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and possess general skills/experience in laboratory work. HEASD's Method Development and Application Branch (MDAB) develops, modifies, improves, evaluates, and validates methods and instrumentation for measuring human and ecosystems exposures, and provides data input for human exposure models. The research focus is to develop and apply methods which will be used by EPA's measurement programs to elucidate source-to-dose pathways and to help define the important and critical routes of exposure. The Branch plans and conducts research and development to advance state-of-the-art sampling technologies, analytical methodologies, and analytical instrumentation for the investigation and characterization of human and ecological exposures to environmental stressors. The Branch designs and field tests screening instruments. The Branch plans and conducts field studies specifically designed to elucidate human and eco-exposure concerns. For additional information regarding HEASD or MDAB, visit the division home page at http://www.epa.gov/heasd/. The student/recent graduate contractor will provide technical support for research focusing on the development of (ASE) and (HPLC) methods. The different tasks include, but are not limited to: 1) Preparation of reagents and standards, 2) Directed development of methods for relevant compendium analytes, 3) Directed sample extraction and quantitative analysis using ASE and HPLC, 4) Routine maintenance and troubleshooting of ASE and HPLC instrumentation, 5) Conducting literature/internet searches and reviewing scientific literature. 6) Collection, processing, and compiling of data or other information into databases/spreadsheets using a variety of Windows-based software (e.g., Microsoft Excel/Word/Access, WordPerfect, EndNote, etc.), 7) Conducting descriptive statistical analyses (i.e., mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum, median, etc.) of data. The student/recent graduate contractor shall perform tasks related to one or more of these areas in support of the MDAB Human Exposure research program. The student/recent graduate will perform duties, as requested, according to specifications and instructions provided by their mentor. Where appropriate, the student/recent graduate will maintain careful and accurate records in designated laboratory notebooks. These notebooks, and all other data produced under this order will be the property of EPA. All necessary instructions and training will be provided by Dr. James Starr, who will also serve as the mentor. This work is to begin approximately on October 3, 2005 and end approximately by September 30, 2006. It is anticipated that the student/recent graduate will work between 20-40 hours per week with the majority of work being Monday through Friday of each week between the hours of 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., however the total number of hours for the period will not exceed 974. The contract will contain an optional extra year, to be exercised at the consent of both the student contractor and the Govenrment. Work will be performed principally in a laboratory setting with a duty location of 109 TW Alexander Drive, RTP, NC 27711. The basic hourly rate for this position reflects the candidate's educational background as having recently completed a four-year degree program in the biological sciences at an accredited university or college. Student/recent graduate contractors will be paid the basic hourly rate only for the number of hours worked and do not receive overtime premium. Student/recent graduate contractors do not accrue leave or holiday benefits and are not paid for any non-work days, regardless of the reason. Federal, State, Local, and Social Security taxes will not be withheld; student/recent graduate contractors are responsible for reporting income to authorities and paying all taxes. Student/recent graduate contractors are responsible for all costs of transportation to and from the principal duty station location.
