Description
WILLOW CREEK STEWARDSHIP Program Goals / Purpose This project proposes the exchange of forest thinning on ten (10) acres for approximately 100 cords conifer/aspen. The Willow Creek aspen regeneration project is a hazardous fuels reduction that has an additional benefit of improving wildlife habitat. The project area is on the west side of Green Mountain in Fremont County and is approximately 10 acres in size. Aspen is the prominent plant component within these treatment units, but lodgepole and limber pine are encroaching and overtaking the aspen stands. In the absence of fire, the area has experienced a significant increase in live and dead woody material and correspondingly, an increased potential for uncontrollable wildfire behavior. Consistent with the President's Healthy Forest Initiative (2002) and the National Fire Plan's 10-year Comprehensive Strategy and Implementation Plan (2002), this project will reduce the likelihood of catastrophic fire within the watershed destroying public forest resources and potentially endangering the lives of adjacent private landowners and firefighters. The Willow Creek II project is also consistent with The Healthy Forest Restoration Act (2003) as it will reduce wildfire risk and "protect, restore, and enhance forest ecosystem components." The project is within Condition Class 3 and Fire Regime III. This is a forest health and hazardous fuels reduction project. Timber that will be cut, lopped and scattered on the treatment areas will be available for wood products such as fencing material firewood. A Stewardship Contract (exchanging goods for services) will enable the BLM to complete the project as well as provide wood products to the local community. Place of Performance Green Mountain in Fremont County, Wyoming. West side of Green Mountain in the Willow Creek Drainage. Benefits Reduction on non-Wildland/Urban interface hazardous fuels and forest health restoration of aspen habitat important to a variety of wildlife species. Aspen stands throughout Green Mountain have been experiencing a general decline in health due to a variety of factors, notable the significant increase in conifers at higher elevation sites. This project will restore the health of the aspen stands within the treatment area. Healthy aspen stands have been noted as displaying fire behavior that is less extreme than comparable stands of conifer. This project will have established forest stand transects and photopoints established to measure effectiveness of treatment and quantify the resultant plant community responses.
