Description
The Federal Occupational Health Service is seeking entry level personnel(s) to assist in collecting data for a research project involving highway and street construction workers being conducted out of Morgantown, WV. This multi-disciplinary project will involve data collection, proximity warning systems evaluation, set up of GPS receivers on all pieces of construction equipment, and video recording. Work in hot environments are expected. Field work is typically scheduled for 10 contiguous days, including weekends. Work days typically begin at 4 or 5 am, and extend up to 12 hours. Sundays are always limited to 8 hours, and other work days may be limited to 8 hours as a result of unanticipated changes in scheduled paving work and/or weather. Daily set up and take down activities are extensive. Before paving crews arrive at the work site, Field crews install GPS receivers on all pieces of construction equipment, prepare GPS receivers to be worn by workers, and set up a research trailer for video reception. Additional GPS receivers are prepared for asphalt delivery truck drivers. These are sometimes installed at the construction site; at other times, part of the crew travels to the asphalt plant to install receivers on trucks and to give drivers their receivers. On study sites where data are being collected on proximity warning systems, field crews spend additional time setting up data loggers and video recorders on asphalt trucks. Once data collection begins, one person regulates all data collection activities, two record observations of worker exposures, one records site and paving operation data, two record video footage, and one provides relief for observers and videographers throughout the day. At the end of each day, data are verified and filed, additional site and operation data are recorded, the research trailer is broken down, and GPS receivers and other equipment are retrieved from all construction personnel and equipment. Field work is currently scheduled through early October at sites in Indianapolis, IN; Beckley, WV; and Parkersburg, WV. Plans are to schedule additional field work throughout Fiscal Year 2006. Necessary Training: As a minimum, a BS degree in the following disciplines are required: industrial hygiene, public health, occupational health, environmental science, technical research, engineering, occupational safety, and social sciences or administration. Qualified individuals should submit their resume to Federal Occupational Health, Attn: Michelle Stemmons, Suite 714, 536 S. Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60605. Or by email to: mstemmons@psc.gov. All resumes will receive equal consideration without regard to race, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, political affiliation, age, or any other factor not related to the evaluation process.
