Description
Sandia National Laboratories is offering commercial licensing opportunities for the following patent. Licensees will have the option to obtain, up to and including, an exclusive license to the patent in a pre-negotiated, defined field of use for reasonable compensation. US Patent # 6,253,680 entitled ?Diversionary Device.? A diversionary device has a housing having at least one opening and containing a propellant and a quantity of fine powder packed within the housing, with the powder being located between said propellant and the opening. When the propellant is activated, it has sufficient energy to propel the powder through the opening to produce a cloud of powder outside the housing, and insufficient energy to fragment said housing. An igniter is also provided for igniting the cloud of powder to create a diversionary flash and bang, but at a low enough pressure to avoid injuring nearby people. A cheaper, less dangerous way to stun kidnappers or terrorists holding hostages has been developed by Sandia National Laboratories. The non-lethal device ? about the size of a small soda can ? creates a blinding, deafening, yet ultimately harmless explosion when lobbed into a room. Unlike earlier versions that ignite from concentrated materials, the explosive source in this device fans out as an airborne powder before it ignites, making it less dangerous to hostages. The stun grenade is also reusable, making it feasible as a training tool.
