Description
The Social Security Administration (SSA) intends to negotiate a 5-year, sole-source contract with the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) located in Silver Spring, Maryland, for the purpose of designing, implementing, and evaluating the use of Pediatric Medical Units (PMU). This contract is a continuation of the Children?s Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Project conducted by AUCD in conjunction with the University Centers For Excellence In Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) and the Leadership Education in Neuro-developmental Disabilities (LEND) programs. The PMU teams will consist of experts in a wide range of pediatric specialties. The PMUs will assist State Disability Determination Services (DDS) in identifying and obtaining appropriate and sufficient medical documentation to allow the disability examiners to make decisions as early in the disability adjudication process as possible. These PMUs will support the DDS by providing additional information and consultation on the childhood cases the DDS deems the most difficult to adjudicate. This contract will support two major goals of the Agency: 1) the development and evaluation of PMUs and 2) the study of a potential expedited benefit process for children with certain disabilities determined to meet the current definition of disability. Both projects will further the Agency?s plan for improving the disability determination process. See Numbered Notes 22 and 26.
