Description
SERVICES SOURCES SOUGHT: The U.S. Department of Commerce, NOAA and the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS) intends to procure for the following services. Scope of Work: Establish Baseline Healthy Coral Microbial Communities (FGBNMS) among Montastraea faveolata colonies and compare them with the same species in areas where corals suffer from greater health impacts (Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary). 1) Collect samples in the field: 5-10 ml needleless syringe samples of the surface mucopolysaccharide layer (SML of up to 100M. faveolata at the FGBNMS. Analyze samples for microbial community. 2) Collect water samples at the FGBNMS for microbial composition analysis. 3) Utilize primary screening methods for the production of anti-infective molecules by marine symbionts in order to determine levels of resiliency M. faveolata due to associated microbes. This primary screen would include a panel of known marine invertebrate pathogens. The government intends to solicit and negotitate with only one known source under the authority 41 USC 253(c) (1). The Mote Marine Laboratory offers expertise to conduct studies within the FGBNMS, to determine the baseline healthy coral microbial communities of certain coral species. Dr Kim Ritchie of the Mote Marine Laboratory is the only expert in this specific field of coral reef science. She has worked on coral microbial associates and aspects of coral healthy for the past 15 years. She received a PhD in genetics and applies this background to her work on corals and genetic identification of bacteria. She has identified, via culture methods, bacterial symbionts of healthy corals and has identified and characterized the causative agents of White Pox disease of Acropora palmate; Aspergillosis of sea fans; White Plague Type II; a localized disease of the burrowing urchin, Meoma ventricosa, and recently a putative causative agent of White Band Disease in Acroporid corals. Dr Ritchie held the position of Senior Scientist at Microgenomics, Inc., where she applied her work on coral microbial associates to antibiotic production from these isolates, which she now applies to coral reef ecology through the Mote Marine Laboratory. Period of performance is from the date of award thru September 30, 2005. This notice of intent is not a request for competitive proposals. However, all proposals received within 15 calendar days after the date of this notice will be considered by the government.
