Description
Synopsis for the Early Detection and Rapid Response Project The USDA Forest Service is soliciting contractors to sort and identify Scolytidae (bark beetles) from field samples in the North Eastern Region and Southern Region of the United States. Some samples will be pre-screened and sorted by individuals at the field trapping level, while other samples will have to be identified in full by the contractor to assess the accuracy of the pre-screening. The final list of identifications and a brief written discussion of results for a given year’s samples should be provided to the Early/Detection coordination team no later than December 15th of each year. The contractor must have a graduate degree in entomology with proven experience sorting and identifying Scolytidae species native to North America, 10 target species (Orthotomicus erosus, Ips sexdentatus, Ips typographus, Hylurgops palliatus, Hylurgus ligniperda, Pityogenes chalcographus, Tomicus minor, Tomicus piniperda, Trypodendron domesticum, and Xyleborus spp.), other exotic Scolytidae, and forest insects in general. Must have the facilities and equipment required to conduct taxonomic identifications and to store specimens in a controlled environment. The Government will make two contract awards. One contract will be awarded for work performed in the Southern Region and one contract will be awarded for work performed in the Northeastern Region. The contract will be for one (base) year, with the option to renew two additional years. Government anticipates work to begin on or around May 1, 2005. This solicitation is opened to small and large schools and universities and to small businesses only. All information regarding this solicitation will be released to the public on February 25, 2005.
