- Description
- Background and Needs Statement A long term goal of the Office of Habitat Conservation, National Marine Fisheries Service, NOAA is to develop a Coral Reefs Education Program directed at middle through high school students which will use two educational books to be used by these students and teachers. It is planned that the Coral Reefs Reader and Study Guide for students will contain about 150-250 pages each and will accompanying a Coral Reefs Reader Educators Guide of about 50-100 pages in length. The content of the books shall be appropriate for the designated students, teachers, community educators for adult audiences, and university science, education and writing instruction professors. The Coral Reefs reader shall provide upper middle and high school students with the knowledge, tools, and skills to engage in discussions about coral reefs and the ability to act on that knowledge; to provide teachers with tools and materials on coral reefs to stimulate student critical thinking, critical reading, research, writing, dialogue, collaboration, and interdisciplinary connections. This project will support the NOAA Coral Reef Task Force?s mission to increase coral reef literacy, awareness, protection, conservation, and sustainable management; and to potentially introduce students to careers in ocean-related disciplines. Long Term Goals of the Project - The goal of this project is to establish a basis for which the above books may be completed. Due to the uncertainty of long term funding for the project, NOAA may use this initial/preliminary development of the proposed books in order to provide a basis for the decisions to decide whether or not complete the long term project. Funding/Period of Performance for this purchase order? NOAA has budgeted $30,000 to complete this project for a period of performance of eight(8) months. Work Task/Deliverable: Task l ? Specifically, the Contractor shall write and submit for review a final draft of a first chapter of a proposed Coral Reefs Reader, a first chapter of a proposed Study Guide, formatted, and a first chapter of a proposed Coral Reefs Reader Educator?s Guide; an outline of each book; and front and back covers for each.
