Description

In the last fifteen years, the share of output in the manufacturing sector has declined from 27.7 percent to 19.8 percent (U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis). Also in the last decade and a half, the static large firm (more than 500 employees) employment in manufacturing has dropped much more rapidly than small firm employment, declines of 3.7 million and 1.1 million, respectively. The number of manufacturing firms had similar declines with large firm counts dropping by 11.7 percent and small firm counts dropping by 7.5 percent (U.S. Census Bureau, Statistics of U.S. Business).The Office of Advocacy seeks research to study changes in manufacturing in the last few decades as they impact the small business sector. Possible research directions include but are not limited to focusing on the changing economies of scale in manufacturing (specialized mini-mills vs. big plants), researching a shift in shares of sub-industries in manufacturing and studying large firms’ outsourcing plants overseas. Questions and answers for this procurement shall commence on May 30, 2005 and end on June 7, 2005. No questions after June 7, 2005.
