Description
Contracting Office Address: AURA-Gemini Observatory, 670 N. A'ohoku Place, Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Point of Contact: Andrew Flach, Gemini Contracts Manager, Phone (520) 749-1560, Fax (520) 203-0237, Email aflach@gemini.edu The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. ("AURA"), acting as the operator of the Gemini Observatory, intends to solicit proposals to supply or build a laser cutting machine capable of making precision slit masks for use in its multi-slit optical and infrared spectrometers. The machine must provide turnkey operation and nominally consist of a laser head, beam delivery optics, a computer-controlled x-y stage, and a motion controller. The machine should allow a technically competent user to cut small slits and circles in sheets of carbon-fiber laminate (a 3-ply lay-up of bi-directional carbon fibers and epoxy resin, 0.008" thick) or 0.003" thick Aluminum sheet by entering an electronic description of the position, shape and size of the desired cuts into the motion controller. The slits will have a minimum size of 120 microns wide by 1 mm long, with an edge straightness deviation and roughness of less than 1 micron. The system should be capable of cutting a minimum of 375 slits/hour. A Request for Proposal (RFP) for this procurement will be issued by AURA in November to those that submit a request to receive the RFP by 18 November 2005. Requests to receive the RFP should be sent by email to Andrew Flach, Gemini Contracts Manager, at aflach@gemini.edu, and should reference N251516 in the subject line. In the body of the email please give the name of your organization and the contact information (name, email, street address, and telephone) for the person who will serve as your single point of contact for this procurement. Please do not send a price quote at this time, but wait to receive the RFP which has additional requirements and specifications.
