- Description
- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District is issuing this Sources Sought Announcement to request submissions from companies who have the ability to mechanically seed in aquatic environments. The U.S. Army Cops of Engineers, New England District will perform habitat restoration at the Ninigret Pond, Charlestown, Rhode Island. The purpose of this habitat restoration project is to restore submerged aquatic vegetation, in the from of eelgrass, to the flood tidal shoal of Ninigret Pond, Char lestown, RI. About 40 acres of the flood tidal shoal will have been dredged under separate contract to a depth of about 0.75 meters (2.5 feet) below MLW. Eelgrass will be restored in the dredged restoration areas through a combination of direct planting and seeding methods. The restored beds will be planted in mosaics of patches (at a 0.5 ratio) throughout the restoration area to mimic natural beds and to allow the beds to coalesce through succession. Monitoring of the effort (by the Corps) will take pl ace for two consecutive growing seasons to ensure success of the project. As part of this restoration effort, the mechanical seeding of eelgrass seeds is required to plant approximately eight and a half acres of subtidal estuarine bottom using 'An Underwa ter Seagrass Seeding Machine.' The only known machine capable of performing this type of work has been developed and patented by The University of Rhode Island. Seeds would be required to be harvested from nearby eelgrass beds and placed in appropriate h olding facilities (a flow-through seawater system with physical variable controls) for maturation. Upon ripening, eelgrass seeds would need to be collected from the holding facility and prepared for planting (i.e., incorporated in to a gel matrix to make the seeds negatively buoyant). The 'Underwater Seagrass Seeding Machine,' a combination of a pumping system and mechanical sled, would be used to pump and sow the eelgrass seed/gel matrix into sediments. Interested parties with similar type equipment and materials should submit a written notice to this office demonstrating your technology and experience to mechanically seed in aquatic environments. This is not a request to be placed on a solicitation mailing list nor is it a Request for Proposal (RFP) or an announcement of a solicitation. Responses are required no later than 5 December 2005. Responses should be addressed to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, 696 Virginia Road, Concord, MA 01742-2751, ATTN: David Dilks (Contracts Bra nch). Firms interested shall provide the above documentation, in one original form and one copy. Responses shall be limited to 5 pages and shall include your small business status, if any. The government will not pay for any material provided in respons e to this market survey nor return the data provided. The results of this survey will be considered to be in effect for a period of one year from the date of this notice.
