- NAICS Code: 541710 THIS IS A PRE-SOLICITATION SYNOPSIS FOR STUDENT SERVICES TO BE AWARDED ON A CONTRACT BASIS BY THE US ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY. The solicitation number is U4RD14 (RFQ-RT-06-00035). The Ecological Exposure Research Division (EERD), Cincinnati, OH, of the National Exposure Research Laboratory, Office of Research and Development , U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, is seeking a student or recent graduate (received degree within the last 24 months) with a M.S. degree in Biology, or a related sub-discipline such as Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Environmental Sciences, Zoology or Botany, to provide services under a contractual agreement in support of research projects. The preferred student will possess skills/experience in specific molecular biology laboratory work, such as DNA extraction and PCR chemistry; also general laboratory practices, including health and safety. The student contractor shall provide technical laboratory support for research projects focusing on any of the following projects: (1) colonization of Pacific coast estuaries and the Great Lakes by aquatic invasive species; (2) quantitative and population genetic assessment of pest beetles to Bt-corn; (3) assessment of non-target effects on insect communities near conventional and genetically-modified corn fields; (4) development of molecular techniques to inventory and quantify organisms collected from stream, lake and ballast samples. Work involveld with the tasks may include, but is not limited to: (1) tissue and sample collection and organization; (2) DNA extractions; (3) PCR amplification and purification; (4) molecular cloning; (5) microsatellite genotyping; (6) DNA sequencing; (7) analysis of genotype and DNA sequence data; and (8) other general laboratory and field duties necessary to carry out research (e.g., sample collection and transport, routine equipment maintenance). This work is to begin on or about January 15, 2006. The contractor shall work 40 hours per week with the majority of work being Monday through Friday of each week between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Only students/recent graduates who can commit to work full-time will be considered. The contract will be for one year. The duty location is Ecological Exposure Research Division, NERL, 26 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Cincinnati, OH 45268. Work will be performed under a variety of settings including office, laboratory, and field. The work is not particularly hazardous or physically strenuous; field and laboratory health and safety training will be provided.
