- SUBJECT: 81mm BODY TUBES AND TAIL CONES The US Research Development & Engineering Command, Armament Research Development and Engineering Center (RDECOM-ARDEC), Picatinny, New Jersey is conducting a market survey to identify potential sources capable of manufacturing, inspecting, and delivering 81mm Body Tubes and Tail Cones to be used on the 81mm Smoke Mortar Cartridges. The contract will be firm-fixed price, with a basic quantity of approx. 13,000 units awarded the first year, and with four priced and evaluated options for approximately 10,000 to 20,000 units per year. A brief description of the 81mm mortar Body Tube and Tail Cone is as follows: Body Tube 81mm for M819: A Steel tube (thin wall) with a length of approx. 9 inches, an ID diameter of 2.94 inches, and an OD that varies from a minimum of 3.160 to is 3.176 Tail Cone 81mm Tail Cones: The Tail Cone is a forged or machined cone that is made of aluminum. The net configuration is machined. The Front ID diameter of the body tube is machined and assembled into a fuze. The rear diameter is machined to be assembled into a Tail Cone. Offeror???s capabilities must include experience in fabrication, assembling and inspection. The Offeror must possess the necessary equipment, facilities, tooling and material (including packaging and palletization material) to fabricate and deliver the above components. Potential candidates must have manufacturing experience with tube (drawn), forge shape (Tail Cone), machining, ultrasonic inspection (UT), and coating for production of the Body Tube and Tail Cone of the 81mm Smoke rounds. The UT equipment must be able to perform inspection for uniformity (freedom from physical defects) in the Tail Cone. Potential candidates must have the capability of high volume production (at least 10k to 20k units per month for any combination of items). Body Tube and Tail Cone drawings for the 81mm M819 Red Phosphorous Smoke are available from the Contracting Officer. Interested firms with capability of providing 81mm Smoke Body Tube and Tail Cone should provide, at no cost to the government, a summary of their firm???s past experience, capabilities, size of business (small or large business), storage facilities, description of facilities and personnel to meet these requirements, equipment, tooling, processes, quality control of material and process, packaging, palletization and any other areas of expertise that may enable them to undertake efforts of similar complexity and magnitude within fifteen days of this publication by electronic mail to edward.gelpke@us.army.mil.
