- Description
- SAIC-Frederick, the Operations and Maintenance Contractor for the NCI Frederick Cancer Research Facility will be soliciting for the services described herein on behalf of the NCI and the NHGRI. The NCI and NHGRI have agreed to pursue a three year pilot - The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). A sine qua non for the pilot project is high quality human biospecimens. The term ?high quality? refers not only the histological and molecular properties of the tissue, but also to characteristics such as degree and quality of clinical annotation, appropriately informed consent and IRB protocol, as well as unencumbered contractual status (MTA or IP restrictions). To ensure the rapid availability, highest quality, and uniformity of the biological specimens for the project, the NCI proposes to establish a centralized Biospecimen Resource Center (BRC) that would acquire material from existing cancer tissue repositories that have been pre-identified as part of an earlier NCI request for information (RFI) seen at the URL (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-CA-06-002.html). In addition, the centralized facility will have a role in evaluating for suitability to the TCGA other existing repositories for potential acquisition of their biospecimens. The centralized facility will provide ongoing services for importing the materials from such repositories, processing those materials into molecular derivatives, and distributing those derivatives to the various analytical sites. The BRC will also develop, implement and publish standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all processes of cancer tissue sample acquisition, preparation, storage, and distribution, including operating and QA/QC procedures that can be validated. Biospecimen types will include tumor tissue, and normal cell sources such as blood and/or buccal cells. The BRC will also establish SOPs for prospective collections of other tumor types, and develop new protocols for extracting molecular isolates from tissues in synchrony with new analytical procedures being developed within the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) framework. The RFP is intended to solicit responses from parties interested in providing centralized biorepository and biospecimen services to the joint NCI and NHGRI - The Cancer Genome Atlas. Only one contract will be issued. If the above listed URL is not available, please notify jlewis@ncifcrf.gov for the text version of the URL. Interested potential sources are to submit a letter of interest with their point of contact information to Jeanne Lewis, email: jlewis@ncifcrf.gov. We are expecting release of the RFP in the next few weeks.
